UNIS Twin Towers You can't tell people you went to Bosnia and not have them ask about the physical state of the country. Suffice to say many building are destroyed and beyond use. Several reconstruction projects were underway in an attempt to complete work before winter sets in. Bridges were being replaced (including the reconstruction of the famous bridge in Mostar), pipes were being layed and new public phones started to appear the week I left. The majority of damage is not going to be fixed anytime soon since the enormous amount of money required to rebuild is just not available.
A lot of Sarajevo's center was built during Austro-Hungarian occipation and the city reminded me of a tiny Budapest.
Among the many attrocities comitted during the war one of the worst was the burning of the Bosnian National Library.
